A modern watch as a design accessory

This design accessory belongs to a collection of wall clocks created in 1949 by the American designer, George Nelson.

The designer produced an initial set of 14 wall clocks. Hundreds of different models were created over the following decades to decorate the walls of different rooms in the home: from entrances to bedrooms, from relaxation areas to wall clocks for the kitchen.
After the architect's death in 1986, his entire archive, consisting of over 7,000 manuscripts, drawings and photographs, was purchased by the Vitra company.

George Nelson and wall clocks

A clock without numbers.

According to the architect's vision, the wall clock fulfils an important decorative function. Given the increasing use of wristwatches in the late 1940s, Nelson decided to emphasise the aesthetic connotations, such as shape and colour, of these design accessories. With this in mind, numbers were no longer necessary: Nelson realised that most people preferred to read the time based on the position of the hands, rather than by the numbers on the watch. For this reason, the architect emphasised, through design, the careful choice of materials, the mechanisms, and the movement of the hands.
